201 stainless steel plate, which is a lower cost alternative to the more traditional 304 stainless steel plate. 201 stainless steel plate contains approximately. The nickel content is half that of 304. Instead, nickel is replaced by an alloy with added manganese and nitrogen. This change also results in a stainless steel that is stronger than 304. copper is added to compensate for the increased work hardening rate. type 201 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel that was originally developed to conserve nickel. This alloy is non-magnetic under annealed conditions, but becomes magnetic when cold worked.

This austenitic steel is non-magnetic under annealing conditions, but becomes magnetic when cold worked. It exhibits excellent toughness at lower temperatures as it increases in strength. It can be fabricated by benching, roll forming and bending. Although this stainless steel is weldable, it shows the worst weld quality and greater risk of intergranular corrosion. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
